Before you come in
Hair needs to be about a quarter inch, roughly two weeks of growth, so the wax can grip it. Shower beforehand, skip the day-of exfoliation, avoid retinol on the area for several days, and take an ibuprofen half an hour ahead if you are nervous. Do not book it for the two days before your period, when skin is most sensitive.
How much it actually hurts
The honest answer: it stings sharply for a second at a time, and the first appointment is the worst one. By the third, most people are having a conversation through it. Regular waxing weakens the follicle so hair comes back finer and the sting gets duller each time.
Aftercare that prevents ingrowns
For 24 hours, no gym, hot tub, sauna, sun or tight clothing on the area. From 48 hours, exfoliate gently two or three times a week and keep the skin moisturised. If ingrowns are your recurring problem, book a vajacial one to two weeks later; it is the single most effective fix.

- $30 for a 20-minute bikini wax at GLAMSTHETICS SLC. Underarm wax is $25 and can be added to the same appointment.
- About a quarter inch, or roughly two weeks after shaving. Shorter than that and the wax cannot grip; much longer and it hurts more, so trim to about half an inch if it has grown out.
- Every three to six weeks, depending on your growth. Staying on a regular cycle keeps everything on the same growth phase, which makes each appointment faster and less painful.
