Waxing

Your first bikini wax, honestly

How long the hair needs to be, how much a first bikini wax hurts, what happens in the room, and the aftercare that actually prevents ingrown hairs.

Nearly everyone is nervous before a first bikini wax, and nearly everyone says afterward that the buildup was worse than the appointment. This studio is private, one-on-one, gender-neutral and LGBTQ+ friendly, and nobody is going to comment on your body. Here is exactly how it goes.

How long the hair needs to be

About a quarter inch, roughly the length of a grain of rice, or two to three weeks of growth after shaving. This is the part people get wrong most often.

  • Too short and the wax cannot grip. Hair shorter than a quarter inch gets skipped or breaks at the surface, and you leave with patches.
  • Too long is also a problem, past about half an inch it pulls more than it needs to. If yours is long, trim it down rather than canceling.
  • Do not shave in the days before. A shave three days out means a wasted appointment. Let it grow.

What to do the day before

  • Exfoliate gently, a washcloth or a mild scrub, not the day of.
  • Skip retinoids in that area for about five days, and skip a fresh sunburn entirely.
  • Come clean and dry. A shower beforehand is plenty. Skip heavy lotion or oil, which keeps wax from adhering.
  • Time it away from your period if you can. Skin is more sensitive for a few days before it starts. Being on your period is fine as long as you wear a tampon or cup; say so or do not, either is fine.
  • Ibuprofen an hour ahead genuinely helps if you are worried. Alcohol does not; it thins your skin’s tolerance rather than helping.

Does it hurt

Yes, some, and less than you are imagining. Each pull is a sharp sting that fades in a couple of seconds, and the area is worked in small sections rather than all at once. The bikini line itself is the mildest area; the closer to the center, the more sensitive.

The first one is the worst one. By the third appointment the hair grows back finer, there is less of it, and most people stop dreading it. A Bikini Wax takes about 20 min and costs $30, so even at its least pleasant it is short.

What actually happens in the room

The door is closed and it is just the two of you. You undress from the waist down, lie on the table with a towel, and are talked through each step before it happens. You will be asked to hold the skin taut or shift position, which helps more than anything else. Wax goes on warm, cloth or hard wax comes off quickly, and the area is cleaned and soothed at the end.

Say something if the wax feels too hot, if you need a pause, or if you want to stop. None of that is unusual and none of it is a problem.

Bikini, and what comes after

A standard Bikini Wax removes hair outside the underwear line, and how much comes off is a conversation at the start of the appointment rather than a fixed menu item. Say what you want and you will get a straight answer about what is comfortable for a first time. There is no pressure to take more off than you came in for.

Other areas people add on the same visit: Underarm Wax at $25, or browsing the rest of the waxing menu. What a lot of people book next is the Pretty Kitty at $55, which is a vajacial rather than a wax. It removes no hair at all; it treats the skin, and booked one to two weeks after a wax it is the single most effective thing for ingrowns.

Ingrowns, and how to avoid them

Ingrowns come from hair growing back into the skin under dead skin cells. The fix is boring and it works.

  • Wait 48 hours, then exfoliate two or three times a week with a gentle scrub or a chemical exfoliant.
  • Moisturize daily. Dry skin traps hair.
  • Wear loose cotton for a day or two afterward.
  • Do not dig at one with tweezers. If one gets hot, swollen or painful, see a doctor. This is not medical advice.

The first 48 hours

No hot tubs, saunas, pools or sun on the area. No workouts that create friction the same day. No sex for about 24 hours. Skip fragranced lotion and self-tanner. Some redness and small bumps are normal and settle within a day.

How often

Every four to six weeks keeps you on the same growth cycle, which is when waxing gets easy. Stretch past six or eight weeks and you are essentially starting over. Set the next appointment before you leave.

Book it, or ask first

Questions are welcome and nothing you ask will be weird. Read how the studio works or the FAQ, text (801) 875-9677, and book online. Making a day of it? Add a facial in the same visit.
