How to prep for your first lash appointment
What to do before your first lash extension appointment in Salt Lake City: what to skip, what to bring, how long it takes and what happens after.
Your first lash appointment is longer and quieter than most people expect, and a little preparation makes the difference between a set that lasts three weeks and one that looks tired by day ten. None of this is complicated. Here is the whole checklist, in order.
A week or two out
- Book the test patch. A Lash Test Patch is Free and takes 20 min. It checks for a reaction to the adhesive and doubles as a consult. Do this at least 48 hours before a full set, ideally a week.
- Pick a style. Read classic, hybrid and volume compared and save two or three inspiration photos, including one you think is too much. Both ends are useful information.
- Stop lash growth serum if it irritates you. Serums are fine in general, but if yours makes your lids pink or your lashes stiff, pause it a week ahead.
- Schedule around events. Give yourself a few days between a first set and anything photographed. New sets settle.
The day before
- Do any tinting or lifting first, not after. A Lash Tint or brow work belongs before the set, not on top of it.
- Skip the eye area workout. Waxing, peels and retinoid-heavy nights right before can leave the lids sensitive.
- Wash your lashes properly. Oil-free cleanser, rinse well, and let them dry fully. Adhesive does not bond to mascara residue.
The morning of
- Come with clean, bare eyes. No mascara, no eyeliner, no eye cream, no primer, no sunscreen on the lids. If you must wear makeup for work first, plan to arrive early and clean it off.
- Skip caffeine if it makes you twitchy. You will be lying still for a while and fluttery eyelids make isolation harder.
- Use the restroom before you start. A Volume Full Set is 180 min and there is no good stopping point in the middle.
- Take out contacts, or bring a case. Your eyes stay closed the whole time, and contacts dry out.
- Wear something comfortable you do not mind lying flat in, and leave heavy perfume at home. It is a small room.
What to skip entirely
Waterproof mascara in the days before, because the residue is stubborn. Oil-based makeup remover. Curling your lashes the morning of. Caffeine-loaded pre-workout. And do not trim or pluck your lashes to "tidy them up" first, which people do more often than you would think.
What actually happens in the room
You lie on a heated bed with your eyes closed for the entire appointment. Your lower lashes are taped and padded down so they are not caught. Then your lashes are isolated one at a time and an extension is bonded about a millimeter from the lid, never touching skin. It should never hurt or sting.
Timing by service: a Classic Full Set is about 120 min, a Hybrid Full Set about 150 min, and volume the longest. Most people fall asleep. That is normal and honestly encouraged.
If anything burns, stings or feels sharp, say so immediately. A watery eye is common and easily fixed with a small adjustment, and it is never an inconvenience to mention it.
Right after, and the first 24 hours
Your eyes may look slightly pink for an hour, the way they do after a nap. That settles. Then:
- Keep them completely dry for 24 hours. No shower spray on the face, no steam, no sweaty workout, no crying at anything.
- Do not touch, rub or pick. Let the bond finish curing.
- Sleep on your back the first night if you can manage it.
- Starting day two, cleanse daily with an oil-free lash wash and brush through with a spoolie.

Booking your fill before you leave
Book the next appointment while you are still in the chair. Natural lashes shed on a four to six week cycle, so a fill at two to three weeks keeps the set full and keeps it cheaper than letting it grow out. How often to fill and which fill to book has the details.
