Brow lamination vs microblading
One is a temporary styling treatment, the other is a tattoo. What brow lamination and microblading each do, what they cost, and how to choose.
People ask for these two in the same sentence, which makes sense, because they promise a similar result: fuller, more defined brows you do not have to draw on. Underneath, they could not be more different. One is a temporary styling treatment and the other is a tattoo. Here is the difference in plain terms, and which one this studio actually offers.
Brow lamination in one paragraph
Lamination is a chemical restructuring of the hair itself, the same family of chemistry as a perm. A softening solution relaxes the bonds in each brow hair, the hairs are combed and set into the direction you want, and a neutralizer locks them there. Nothing is injected, nothing breaks the skin, and no pigment is added unless you also get a tint.
A Brow Lamination is $70 and takes about 45 min. It lasts four to six weeks and then fades out as your brow hairs cycle. Most people pair it with color and shaping: Brow Tint & Wax is $45, Brow Tint alone is $30, and a Brow Wax is $20.
Microblading in one paragraph
Microblading is cosmetic tattooing. A handheld blade of fine needles deposits pigment into the upper dermis in hair-like strokes. It is a permanent makeup procedure performed by a tattoo artist, it breaks the skin, it involves numbing and a healing period, and the pigment stays in your face for one to three years before it fades, usually shifting color as it goes.
The differences that matter
- Permanence. Lamination grows out in four to six weeks. Microblading is a tattoo. Laser removal exists, but it is expensive, multi-session and not gentle on the area.
- Invasiveness. Lamination sits on the hair. Microblading goes into the skin, which means aftercare, scabbing, and an infection risk that lamination does not have.
- What it can fix. Lamination directs and fluffs the hair you have. It cannot create a brow where there is no hair. Microblading draws strokes anywhere, including bald patches and over-plucked tails.
- Result shape. Lamination looks like a really good brush-up: fluffy, textured, slightly wild if you want it. Microblading looks drawn, because it is drawn.
- Recovery. Lamination has a 24 hour rule and that is it. Microblading has roughly two weeks of healing plus a touch-up appointment.
- Regret cost. If you do not like a lamination, wait a month. If you do not like a microblade, you live with it while it fades.
Cost over two years
A lamination every six weeks with tint runs about eight or nine appointments a year. Microblading is typically $400 to $700 in Salt Lake City for the initial session plus a required touch-up, then a color refresh every 12 to 18 months. Over two years the two land closer together than people expect. The real difference is not money, it is reversibility.
Which one fits you
Lamination makes sense if you have brow hair but it grows downward, sideways or in a cowlick, if your brows look thin only because the hairs lie flat, if you want to test a bigger brow before committing to anything permanent, or if you like a fluffy, brushed-up shape.
Microblading makes sense if you have genuine gaps with no hair, alopecia or medical hair loss, heavily over-plucked brows from years past, or you truly never want to think about brows again and accept the tradeoffs.
Skip lamination for now if your brow hair is already fragile from overprocessing, if the skin there is broken, sunburned or reacting to a retinoid, or if you are within a week of a chemical peel. Overprocessed brow hair gets frizzy and brittle, and that is the one real risk of this service.
