Lash lift vs lash extensions

A lash lift and lash extensions answer the same complaint from opposite directions. One reshapes the lashes you already have, the other adds new ones on top of them. Here is the honest comparison, including what each costs over a year and whether you can have both.

What a lash lift actually is

A lash lift is a perm for your natural lashes. They are wrapped over a silicone rod, softened with a gentle lifting solution, set in a new curl, then conditioned. Nothing is added, so the result depends entirely on the lashes you walked in with. If your natural lashes are short, they will be short and lifted.

A Lash Lift is $65 and takes about 45 min. Most people add color, because a lift opens the eye but does not darken anything: Lash Lift + Tint is $85 for both, and a standalone Lash Tint is $30. A lift holds for six to eight weeks and then grows out gradually. There is nothing to fill and nothing to remove.

What extensions actually are

Extensions are individual synthetic lashes bonded one at a time to your own, which means length, curl, thickness and density are chosen rather than inherited. You can go from barely-there to dramatic, and you can change direction at the next appointment.

Price depends on the style. A Classic Full Set is $145 (120 min), a Hybrid Full Set is $170, and a Volume Full Set is $200. If you are not sure which, start with the breakdown of classic, hybrid and volume.

Cost over a year

This is where the two stop being comparable, and it is the number most people wish they had seen first.

• Lift: six to eight appointments a year at $65, or $85 with tint. Roughly $400 to $650 a year depending on cadence.
• Extensions: one full set plus a fill every two to three weeks, so about 18 to 22 fills a year. On hybrid that is $170 up front plus fills at $75, landing in the neighborhood of $1,500 a year.

Those annual figures are estimates built from current service prices, not a quoted package. Extensions run roughly three times what a lift runs. That is not an argument against either one, it is just worth knowing before you fall in love with a set.

Maintenance, honestly

• A lift is close to maintenance-free. Keep them dry for 24 hours, skip oil on the lashes for a day, then go live your life. Mascara is allowed, swimming is allowed, sleeping face down is allowed.
• Extensions ask for real habits. Daily cleansing with an oil-free wash, no oil near the lash line, no waterproof mascara, sleeping off your face, and a fill on schedule. The Utah aftercare guide is the unglamorous full version.
• Fills are the recurring commitment. Skip them and the set thins out unevenly. See how often to fill and which fill to book for the timing.

If you already know you will not cleanse your lashes daily, a lift will make you happier than a set will.

Who each one is for

Book a lift if you have decent natural length already, want a low-effort result, swim or train hard, travel constantly, wear makeup some days and not others, or want to test whether a more open eye is the look you were chasing.

Book extensions if you want length or fullness your own lashes do not have, want to wake up finished, have sparse or gappy lashes, or want color, glitter, decals or gems, which a lift simply cannot do. That last one is this studio’s specialty; see colored lash extensions.

Wait on both if your natural lashes are currently damaged from a bad set or from irritation. Give them one growth cycle to recover first.

Can you do both?

Not at the same time, and not back to back. A lift changes the shape and the surface texture of the natural lash, and that surface is exactly what adhesive needs to grip. Extensions applied to freshly lifted lashes sit at strange angles and shed early.

Going from a lift to extensions, wait until the lift has grown out, usually six to eight weeks or a little longer. Going the other way, have the set removed properly, Lash Removal is $30, then give your lashes a week or two before lifting.
