Classic vs hybrid vs volume lashes: which to book

Every first-time lash client asks the same question at the door: classic, hybrid or volume? The honest answer is that none of them is "the best." Each one is built for a different look, a different lifestyle and a different set of natural lashes. Here is how to pick without guessing.

Classic lashes: one extension per natural lash

Classic is the original. One extension is isolated and bonded to one natural lash, so you end up with exactly as many lashes as you started with, only longer, curlier and darker.

Book classic if you:

• Already have a decent amount of natural lashes and mostly want length and curl.
• Like the "great mascara, every day" look rather than a fluffy one.
• Are brand new to extensions and want the lowest-maintenance entry point.
• Have finer or weaker natural lashes that should not carry a lot of weight.

Volume lashes: handmade fans for fullness

Volume uses fans of two to six ultra-fine extensions, hand-made at the table and applied to a single natural lash. Because each lash in the fan is so light, the total weight stays safe while the lash line gets dramatically fuller and softer.

Book volume if you:

• Have sparse or gappy natural lashes and want them to look full.
• Want a soft, fluffy, "done" look with or without makeup.
• Like drama and want it to still look intentional, not heavy.
• Are fine with a longer appointment (about 180 min for a full set).

A Volume Full Set is $200 and a Volume Fill is $85.

Hybrid lashes: the best of both

Hybrid is a deliberate mix of classic and volume, usually somewhere around half and half, mapped across the eye. You get texture and dimension from the classics plus fullness from the fans, which is why it is the most-requested set in the studio.

Book hybrid if you:

• Want more than classic but are not sure you want full volume.
• Love a wispy, textured, spiky-but-soft lash line.
• Have uneven natural lashes and want to fill gaps without going fully fluffy.

A Hybrid Full Set is $170 (150 min) and a Hybrid Fill is $75.

Quick decision guide

• "I want to look like I have great mascara on." Classic.
• "I want fuller lashes but still natural-ish." Hybrid.
• "I want to wake up looking done." Volume.
• "I have very few natural lashes." Volume, mapped lightly.
• "My natural lashes are thin and fragile." Classic, or a light hybrid with shorter lengths.
• "I want color, glitter or gems." Any of the three. Colored and glitter extensions start at $10+ on top of a set.

Things that matter more than the style name

Your natural lashes decide the ceiling. A good esthetician maps length and weight to what your lashes can actually hold. If a set feels heavy, it is too heavy, no matter what it is called.

Curl and length are separate choices. Classic, hybrid and volume all come in different curls (C and D are the most common) and lengths. Bring inspiration photos and be honest about how much drama you want on a Tuesday.
